SKI TOURING LOFOTEN

Ski touring in Lofoten: A day in the backcountry

For skiers looking for a personal Topptur guide in Lofoten, away from the crowds.

We focus on safe lines, technique coaching, and finding the best snow available.

Who is this for?

You need a solid foundation on alpine skis. If you can ski red runs comfortably in a ski resort, you are ready for your first backcountry ski day. You don’t need prior experience with touring bindings or skins; we will coach you on uphill technique.

ABOUT THE DAY

We don't believe in fixed routes. For a real ski holiday in Lofoten, the weather and the snowpack must dictate the plan. As your mountain guide, we look at the avalanche forecast every morning, check where the wind has shifted the snow, and choose the peak that fits your level.

THE EXPERIENCE

We meet in the morning for a quick coffee and gear check. Before putting the skins on, we look at the avalanche forecast together. We want you to understand how we read the terrain and why we choose that specific mountain in Lofoten.

The ascent takes about 2 to 3 hours, gaining between 500 and 1000 meters. We don't race. We find a steady pace, show you how to save energy while walking uphill, and teach you how to make efficient kick-turns on steeper slopes.

On the summit, we transition. It’s time for a quick snack, a look at the sea below, and preparing the gear for the descent.

Then, we ski down. Your guide goes first to check the snow and show you the safest line. We look for the best conditions available that day, whether it's cold arctic powder or spring corn.

We end the day back at the vans with tired legs, a better understanding of winter mountains, and a clear idea of where to find the best local cinnamon buns.

WHY WITH TRAD?

We live in Lofoten year-round. This is our backyard. We don't just follow a GPS track or take you to the crowded classics if the snow there is bad.

We combine professionalism with the warmth of sharing a day on the snow with friends. You will ski good lines, but you will also learn how to make better decisions in the backcountry on your own.

No rush, no massive groups, no corporate tours. Just real skiing with people who live for this.

FAQ

What equipment do I need to bring?

You need your standard ski touring setup: touring skis (or splitboard), skins, boots, and poles. You will also need a helmet, goggles, sunglasses, and a backpack with warm layers, water, and lunch. If you don't own your ski setup, don't worry. Let us know and we will recommend the best local shops in the area to rent reliable gear.

Is avalanche safety gear mandatory? What if I don't have it?

Yes, it is 100% mandatory. You must carry an avalanche safety kit containing a transceiver (beacon), a shovel, and a probe. You can also rent this equipment in one of the local shops.

I’ve never used avalanche safety gear before. Is that an issue?

Not at all. We do a mandatory safety briefing before we start walking. We show you how to use the transceiver, probe, and shovel, and we practice with them. Safety is a skill we share, not a secret.

What happens if I'm slower than the rest of the group?

This is a private guiding day. The pace is yours. We adjust the route, the breaks, and the elevation to your fitness level. We are here to enjoy the day, not to hit a speed record.
