Svolværgeita, also known as The Goat of Svolvær, is the most famous climbing peak in Lofoten and one of Norway’s most iconic summit experiences. 

Who is this for?
Anyone in good physical condition can participate. No climbing skills are required. The experience may be a challenge for those with a fear of heights, but we’ll overcome it together!

The Svolværgeita experience


We begin with a scenic 40-minute hike from the parking area up to the base of Svolværgeita, crossing classic Lofoten mountain terrain.

At the wall, your certified climbing guide will provide all equipment and a full safety briefing before the ascent.


You’ll climb a classic two-pitch route to the summit, reaching the famous twin horns of Svolværgeita. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over Svolvær, the fjords, and the surrounding granite peaks.

The history of Svolværgeita


The first recorded ascent of Svolværgeita took place in 1910 by Ferdinand Schjelderup, Alf Bonnevie Bryn and Carl Wilhelm Rubenson.

This ascent became a landmark moment in Norwegian climbing history and helped establish Lofoten as one of the country’s premier climbing destinations.

Today, climbing Svolværgeita remains a bucket-list objective for climbers and adventurers from around the world.


FAQ about climbing Svolværgeita


Do I need climbing experience?

No previous climbing experience is required to climb Svolværgeita with a guide.

However, you should be in good physical condition, as the experience involves a steep approach hike and several hours of activity in mountain terrain.

If you have a strong fear of heights or severe vertigo, this may not be the most enjoyable experience for you. While many people feel nervous at first, the exposure can be intense for some participants.


Can children join the climb?

Yes, children can join provided they are at least 10 years old, have a suitable fitness level, feel comfortable with heights, and are motivated for the experience.

As every child is different, we recommend contacting us in advance so we can help assess whether the climb is appropriate.


What if the weather is bad?

Safety always comes first.
If conditions are unsuitable, we will offer to reschedule or suggest alternative activities.


When is the best time to climb Svolværgeita?

The best season is from May to September, when conditions are typically dry and stable. If weather conditions are favourable and the route is free of snow, it is often possible to climb Svolværgeita in April and October as well.
